What does the transfer station take????

The transfer station in Goshen is a Solid waste facility and we do not collect Hazardous waste.  There are specific Hazardous waste collection days throughout the summer all over Sullivan county and these dates are always on the bulletin board at the transfer station. HouseHold-Waste-Schedule-2021

What exactly is considered solid waste?

Well your household garbage of course, anything that can be recycled (plastic, glass, metal, aluminum, paper and cardboard) bulky waste, electronic waste, propane tanks and construction/demolition debris are all examples.  Solid waste is not necessarily free from contaminating our environment in fact electronic waste like computers, TV's, microwaves and refrigerators all have parts that you DON'T want to get into your water supply. The transfer station does accept some items that are considered hazardous such as used oil and universal waste including antifreeze, batteries, cathode ray tubes, waste lamps (bulbs) and mercury containing devices (switches, thermometers, relays, thermostats).

Hazardous wastes which Goshen does NOT accept

would include paint, solvents and spray cleaners, aerosol cans with flammable liquid still inside, pool chemicals, battery acid, drain cleaners, paint strippers, fireworks (new), gasoline, gunpowder, bullets, old ether, pesticides, prescription medicines, roof strippers, asbestos, roofing tar just to name a few..basically if you wouldn't pour it out or leave it in your front yard where your kids play don't bring it to us!  These items should NEVER be brought into the transfer station as part of a demolition load.

We have found hazardous wastes in the demolition bin after people have paid to dispose of things they called demolition debris.  THIS IS NEVER OK.  In fact these chemicals can leach into the ground from the bins and wreak havoc on rivers, streams, wells etc.

There are ways to dispose of these wastes appropriately you may have to wait for a specific drop off day and you may have to drive a bit farther and wait in line, but knowingly throwing these things in your trash bags or demolition or worse yet leaving them in the KMART is not legal and can be dangerous.  Now I do not have the right to arrest you for violating dump policy (lol) but it does make me very sad to see, and I am often the one that has to climb in the dumpster to pick it out!

The majority of people using the transfer station follow the rules, but even one or two people breaking them can have repercussions...if you are unsure of something just ask : ) If you think you placed something you shouldn't in a garbage bag just ask...I will personally pull out the item and we can figure out the appropriate way to dispose of it together : )  I am an employee of the town of Goshen and I also live here...it is important to me to help keep Goshen the beautiful place it is and to help all community members to dispose of unwanted items.

I work for each of you : )
